CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

Emma

Opening the door, I step into my apartment only to run into Hannah seated on the couch. I try to ignore my roommate and make a beeline to my room. Hannah grabs my bag. “Wait a second. What’s the rush?”

“I’m tired.”

Hannah lifts an eyebrow. “Is that the best excuse you can come up with?”

“It’s true. Look at my puffy eyes.”

“What are you talking about? You don’t look tired.”

I pause. “That’s because I got some good coffee at Mara’s home.”

“Woah! Good coffee? And who is Mara?”

My cheeks redden. Oops. I shouldn’t have talked about Mara. That was a mistake. But I can’t take it back now. Hannah pats the space beside her on the couch. I reluctantly drop my bag and sit beside her. Before I can say another word, there is a knock on the door. Hannah jumps to her feet. “Emma, stay put. Don’t move!”

“Okay,” I say, placing my hands on my lap.

I did tell Brandon I wasn’t going to tell anyone about Mara. Technically, I can keep to my word since Hannah isn’t working at GeoPont and will never run into Brandon. Hannah opens the door and Riley, our next-door neighbor, steps in. Oh, gosh. Hannah hugs Riley and motions for her to take a seat opposite me.

“Hi Emma.”

“Hi Riley.”

“What’s going on?” Riley asks, as she makes herself comfortable on the chair.

I look at Hannah with pleading eyes, hoping that she won’t force me to talk about Mara in front of Riley. Telling one person is one thing. But two people. I don’t know. Isn’t that how gossip spreads? However, my pleading eyes lose out.

Hannah casts an amused look in my direction. “Emma has something to share.”

I frown. “I don’t think this is a good idea.”

“There are no secrets amongst us,” Hannah smiles.

“Unless it has to do with men,” Riley smirks.

I blush.

“Oh, my goodness,” Riley laughs. “Emma is interested in a guy.”

I shake my head, furiously.

“Whenever a girl denies being interested in a man like that, we know what it means, right Hannah?” Riley says.

Hannah gives a thumbs-up.

“You two are intolerable,” I mutter. “Brandon isn’t someone I’m interested in.”

“Brandon, huh?” Riley says with a sly smile. “I already like the sound of his name.”

“Isn’t this the guy at your workplace who is Mr Grumpy with a capital G?” Hannah asks.

Riley leans forward. “Intriguing.”

“Stop it, the both of you,” I say. “You are making a fuss about nothing.”

“I’m not the one who is looking flustered,” Riley says.

“Who says that?” I challenge her.

“Both of us!” Hannah chimes in.

“Are you going to tell us what’s going on?” Riley asks. “I do need to get back to my cooking.”

“Since when do you cook?” Hannah asks.

“Since my roommate, Nora, got married to her fiancé,” Riley replies.

“Oh yeah, I forget,” Hannah says. “How is Nora doing?”

“They are happy,” Riley replies.

“But have you found a new roommate?” Hannah asks.

“Not yet,” Riley replies. “But stop talking about me. We are waiting for you, Emma.”

I take a deep breath and share what happened with Brandon. The two women listen quietly, not interrupting me.
