Mia settled into the pilot’s seat on the bridge of the Erinyes and started running through the preflight checklist, grateful she didn’t spot any damage reports on the system display. Ito hadn’t mentioned anything either.

She didn’t think small arms fire would do much. That didn’t make it impossible. A stray shot here or there could mess with a thruster, vent, or antenna.

“Natalie Ghallia is attempting to contact you,” Debbie II reported.

“Put her through,” Mia ordered.

“What did you do?” Ghallia shouted. “Did you think it through at all?”

“I did you a favor,” Mia replied. “I killed Pontafe.”

“I didn’t ask you to kill Pontafe,” snapped Natalie. “I asked you to break his stranglehold on the Gate. I specifically told you not to kill him.”

“He came to kill me,” Mia noted. “And he talked about how he was going to torture and kill you, too. I didn’t go looking for him. What did you expect me to do? Sit there and let him kill me and then come after you?”

“I can handle myself. Don’t you understand? There was a way this had to be done. I needed to weaken him first and force him away on my schedule. His sudden death changes everything, especially since you couldn’t set things up for my total control of the array. Now there’s a power vacuum, and it’s going to bring violence to the Gate. Every idiot with a few men and guns will think they can rule the Gate.”

Mia let out a long, weary sigh. “This place is nothing but a pile of manure covered with gold. I don’t care what happens to it.”

“You should care!” shouted Natalie. “You don’t understand what you’ve done.”

“Kill the comms, Debbie II,” Mia instructed. “Let’s get back to preflight checks.”

“I should note I’m monitoring local broadcasts and general public sensor feeds,” Debbie II told her. “There are, unfortunately, several ship-to-ship battles that have broken out around the Gate and armed groups are engaging each other in pods.”

Mia scrubbed a hand down her face. “We need to get out of here now.” She motioned to Karin and Ryoko. “Paul, you fly the transport and keep up with me. You two with me. We might need to push open the door.”
