âYouâre too quiet,â I tell Ramin, taking my gaze off the rapidly changing floor numbers to look at my youngest son. He lounges with his shoulder propped against the elevator wall, one hand in his pocket and the other holding his phone. He scrolls aimlessly with a bored expression on his handsome face.
âTalk to her, Rosie,â he mutters to his sister.
Rosana glances at me and shrugs.
I yawn to pop my ears. Kaneâs penthouse views are unparalleled, but thereâs always a price to be paid for flying too close to the sun.
Looking at my children, I study Ramin especially. Heâs always been a brooder, the one most affected by Kane having left early for college. Tonight, my youngest boy seems especially pensive. Thereâs petulance in the frown he wears, and I sense the weight of melancholia.
I havenât paid enough attention to him, I realize. Possibly ever. When he entered my life, I still worried most about Kane. Then Rosana came along, and I felt fear unlike anything Iâve ever felt. Protecting her and teaching her how to protect herself became a driving force. Sheâs so lovely and sweet, a tempting target for the unscrupulous. I still worry. About all of them.
Ramin needs a partner.
The thought enters my mind abruptly, and I close my eyes against it.
Thankfully, the elevator comes to an imperceptible halt and the doors open, allowing us into the penthouseâs entry vestibule. I open my eyes as Ramin straightens and tucks his phone away. Heâs dressed in black jeans and a black dress shirt left open at the collar with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He always looks handsome and polished in a rakish way. Women love to look at him, but heâs single. And truthfully, Iâve preferred that to the alternative of another daughter-in-law I canât tolerate.
But delaying getting him hitched is a missed opportunity, really. I could find the right woman for him. If the choice is mine, Iâll know I can live with it. I certainly canât leave it to him. My boys have the absolute worst taste in women.
Stepping out of the elevator first, I eye the two burly security guards in their requisite black suits. At least the suits are tailored. But why is there a need for clearly pricey professionals? What is Kane protecting himself from? Is there a known threat, or is my son just being cautious because the woman heâs fucking is as trustworthy as a rat?
One of the two double doors open, and Witte stands there, looking delicious as always. Iâd love to get my claws and teeth into all the majordomoâs brutal muscle, which he tries to make civilized with custom suits. Itâs the nature of the beast for men to resent powerful, dominant women, which often leads to the hottest sexual encounters.
âWitte,â I purr. âAlways a pleasure to see you.â
âMom!â Rosana whispers furiously at my back, which widens my smile.
âIâm doing my job correctly, then,â Witte replies with customary aplomb.
One day, my daughter will play power games with men and win.
