PART 3

DEMOCRACY AND ITS DIGITAL DISCONTENT

PETER POMERANTSEV

What’s so bad about believing in yesterday, some people might ask? After all, aren’t ‘yesterdays’ just conservatives with a reverence for historic institutions and traditional ideas? But as the disinformation expert Peter Pomerantsev explained to me when we met in London in 2019, today’s ‘yesterdays’ are exemplified by Vladimir Putin and his nostalgia for the twentieth-century Soviet Union. Putin’s Russia is pioneering a particularly corrosive kind of ‘yesterday-ism’ – one that is now being imitated by Erdogan, Trump, Duterte, Orbán, and Bolsonaro.

Pomerantsev is particularly good at explaining how ‘yesterdays’ are using technology to wreck today’s world, explaining that it has become the primary battleground for Putin’s trolls, who flood the internet with lies. As for Pomerantsev’s solutions to the disinformation war, he argues that rather than censoring the internet, we need to make Facebook or Google’s algorithms more transparent, so that we can understand the architecture of the information economy.
