CHAPTER 9

MERILEE

Tommy holds his hand out to help me off the floor. No matter how many times our fingers brush or hold tight, a tingling sensation that’s a combination of excitement and nervousness races through me like bubbles trying to escape a can of soda.

He picks up the chair and then sits back down. I smooth my hair, wishing I wasn’t wearing this silly robe. A girl like Cassie would probably have on something cute while prancing around the kitchen, demonstrating how to knead the dough and allowing the moments shared with her crush to become more because she’s not a self-conscious, self-sabotager like me.

I didn’t bother changing because I told myself I can’t let Tommy see how I really feel, that I care what he thinks of me, and risk experiencing rejection all over again.

This leads me to have to answer his question about what’s going on between us, if only to get back my letter to Santa. I’d meant to stick it in an envelope but wanted to dig out a nice one and not a regular business mailer.

This is going to be hard to say, but I go for it, casting aside insecurities and the possibility that after this I won’t be able to show my face in Hawk Ridge Hollow ever again. “The problem is that I’m not like Cassie,” I blurt.

My posture straightens slightly, surprised at that response. “What do you mean?”

Tommy’s eyes narrow with what I assume is disbelief because although we never gossiped about my roommate, we’d shared plenty of secret eye rolls when in her presence. She was more than slightly—how to put this nicely?—extra, intense, a ball of frenetic energy, and always simpering for attention.

“But what about that afternoon when I got back to my dorm and you were in there, on my bed, uh...?” The words gouge their way out of what I realize now is my broken heart.

Tommy wipes his hand down his face. “I was afraid this was the problem. Yes, I was sitting on your bed because Cassie had shopping bags on the desk chair. If you recall, I was waiting for you because we’d made plans to see the play my roommate was performing in.”

The memory filters back and along with it, how crushed I was to see Tommy and Cassie making out.

“I heard someone coming down the hall, checked my watch, and said, ‘Ah, that must be Merry.’ Cassie teased about
