AN EXCURSION TO
HAKONE AND MOUNT FUJI
Get up close to Japan’s most iconic natural landmark
See map on pages 56–7
With its natural hot springs, stunning mountain and lakeside scenery and proximity to Mount Fuji, Hakone has become one of the most popular weekend escapes for Tokyoites, who come for either an attraction-packed day trip or a more relaxing overnight break that takes them through a well-worn but nonetheless extremely worthwhile sightseeing route.
That classic route begins at Hakone-Yumoto Station with a ride on the charming, if not rickety, Hakone-Tozan switchback railway. The two-carriage train winds its way upward through a succession of tiny stations before terminating at the mountain village of Gora, en route passing through Chokoku-no-Mori Station, which gives access to the fantastic Hakone Open-Air Museum. With more than 120 works displayed across 70,000 square meters (84,000 square yards) of scenic grounds, plus five exhibition halls that include a pavilion home to more than 300 Picasso pieces, it’s well worth hopping off the Hakone-Tozan for a couple of hours here. The outdoor work includes pieces from sculptors such as Bourdelle, Rodin, Miro and Moore. In fact, the OAM has the world’s largest Henry Moore collection, with 26 pieces on a rotated exhibition schedule. Adding a soothing quirk to a visit, the museum also has an outdoor foot bath where you can stop and soak your feet in natural hot spring water (www.hakone-oam.or.jp).
