Carol
Carol had to admit her shoulder was killing her. Sheâd never felt pain this bad in her whole life and she hoped sheâd never feel it again.
She couldnât even fathom how ordinary people dealt with it. She guessed that was what morphine was for. Or other kinds of drugs. She was making do with the energy the Earth sorcerers pumped into her, and the nasty herbs from Jasmineâs mother, Cecilia.
She could barely access her own Earth sorcery. She had asked why, being an Earth sorcerer, she couldnât do her own healing.
Cecilia had replied that it was always harder to heal physical wounds from the inside out than from the outside in. That healing from the inside out was a stronger sort of healing, but it was also the most subtle. Slower, she said.
Carol was healing from the inside out, with the help from outside showing the sorcery the right paths. Showing the energy the way to go.
Ouch. Carol knew she should be patient. She could also feel the intense pressure of the battle building outside. Of the sun and the moon aligning. Of the sigils spinning. And that new pattern, the four-cornered diamond shape.
She could also feel the pressure from the conclave room in the Mansion.
She could feel the meeting starting and resented being locked out. Although, admittedly, part of her was grateful to not have to deal. She knew Jasmine would rather not be there at all.
Jasmine would rather be in Ernestoâs sitting room, meeting with the Brown Berets and the sorcerers of Los Manos, plotting strategy, instead of trying to keep this limping Association from completely imploding.
Carol was coming to agree with Jasmine. She wondered if the Association had outlived its usefulness. That this wasnât the dawning of a new day and time for something else to take over. Whether that was this âmagic for the peopleâ or not, Carol didnât know. All she knew was the way things have been going sure wasnât working anymore.
She tried to adjust herself on her pillows. Her tailbone already sore from being in one place too long.
âDamn, that hurts,â she said.
So what could she do? Carol was alone temporarily. Sorcerers were in the other room still looking at the sigils. Jasmine had her vote as proxy. Rosalia was busy.
Carol slowed her breathing down. The map. She could find out more about the map of DC.
She hadnât done a lot of astral travel before but since meeting Rosalia, sheâd learned pretty quickly and, frankly, being in her body right now was the pits, soâ¦
She thought, I know the pattern itself and I know what part of the country Iâm aiming for. Can I just send my astral body there out into the æthers?
She knew Rosalia would have her head for trying again. She shouldnât spend too much time outside her body in her weakened state. But she couldnât bear to just lie here and stare at the ceiling either.
Closing her eyes, she dropped her attention down into that place between her solar plexus and her hips.
