With her heart pounding in her chest, Adelaide dashed forward as Gideon did the same, both of them stopping in their tracks when Moe suddenly let out what almost sounded like a whimper before he plopped down on the floor and his bushy tail began to wag. A second later, Harvey was directly next to the beast, rubbing his little kitten head against Moeâs fur, purring up a storm when Moe gave him a lick, and not one that suggested he was debating whether the kitten was good enough to eat.
âI wasnât expecting that,â Louis said, brandishing a broom heâd snatched from beside the door and wielding it quite as if heâd been ready to shoo Moe away from Harvey if the dog went on the attack. âI thought for sure that kitten was a goner.â
âAs did I,â Adelaide agreed, her heart rate returning to normal. âFortunately for everyone involved, it appears Moe isnât in a mood for a snack but rather for a new friend.â She grinned when Harvey scrambled up Moeâs back and made himself at home, Moeâs only reaction to that unexpected circumstance being lowering his head to the floor between two overly large paws and thumping his tail a few times.
âIt seems as if Moe has gone from guard dog to kitten nanny,â she said, earning a sigh from Gideon in return.
âToo right it does but know that Iâm holding you directly responsible for ruining what was, up until a few seconds ago, a very intimidating guard dog.â
Adelaide resisted a laugh when Moeâs tongue began lolling out of his mouth. âHe doesnât look very intimidating now.â
âLetâs hope itâs not a permanent condition,â Gideon said. âHe wonât be much use to me out in the field if he starts befriending the criminals I need him to help me apprehend.â
Adelaide tilted her head. âHow does he do that?â
âNormally baring his teeth is all thatâs needed to have suspects freezing on the spot.â
âIâm sure Moe knows the difference between sweet kittens and miscreants, but . . .â She glanced at Moe again. âIsnât it simply adorable how Moe seems to have found a new companion?â
âIâm not keeping Harvey.â
She gave an airy wave of her hand. âIâm not suggesting you should, although it might be nice for Moe if youâd allow Harvey to stay here temporarily. That way heâd get to develop a closer friendship with Harvey, and Iâd get an opportunity to spend time with my other cats, whoâve been slightly neglected since Iâve been hauling Harvey around with me everywhere, hoping his adorability will have someone longing to give him a special home.â
âYou seem to be using different versions of the word adorable a lot, but even though Iâll admit that Harvey possesses a certain charm, Iâm not that someone longing to give him a special home.â
Edna stepped up beside Gideon and gave his arm a pat. âYou keep telling yourself that, dear, but Iâm afraid youâre doomed to become a kitten father.â She turned to Louis. âI
