BAKER’S STATEROOM, CARRIER TWO EIGHT NINE, RON’TAX SYSTEM

“I see we’re heading out system,” Irina said from the speaker. “Are we leaving Anya behind?”

“No. Admiral James didn’t want to watch her wreck the planet—something about his legacy, I think—so we’re moving on to fight the second clan of Legastians. Anya’s going to finish destroying the planet and then catch up with us.”

“I wanted to talk with you about that,” Irina said. “Fighting the Legastians. Well, not really fighting them, so much as preparing to fight them.”

“Okay. I’ve got a few minutes. What’s on your mind?”

“This next battle is too important to leave to chance. We need to scout them before we go charging in there.”

Baker smiled. “Do you mean the two of us, or is that something we’re going to set up for someone else to do?”

Irina chuckled. “Aside from Daiyu and Sophia, is there anyone else you’d trust with something so important?”

“No, but I don’t know that James is going to be big on his fighter commander running off to go do something that he could order someone else to do.”

“Well, that’s your part to figure out. You can either ask permission or beg forgiveness. I’m okay with the second option; this is too important to leave to someone that was either in the training command or a popsicle only a month ago.”

“I think we already know the admiral’s position on us doing things without advising him ahead of time.”

“We do, but those were all your ideas. This one’s mine.”

“Wait. Chasing after Sophia when she was under control of the Legastian queen wasn’t your idea?”

“Only because I had all the information. If you’d have known everything I did, you would have gone after her from the start.”

“True, but it was still your idea we were acting on.”

“Does it really matter?” Irina asked. “Could we instead concentrate on what needs to be done?”

Baker smiled to himself. “Sure. What do you have in mind?”

“When we get to the new system, we go to the farthest and lowest point of the jump area and stop, then we jump across at the slowest speed possible. As we won’t be carrying any speed, we won’t make a big signature when we enter, and it will be easy to jump back if we find ourselves in the middle of the Legastian defenses.”

“And if we’re not in the middle of the defenses?”

“Then we sit there, really quietly, and we watch. We only use our passive systems, so they don’t even know we’re there. When we’ve seen enough, we jump back quietly, without them ever knowing we were there.”

“Seems safe enough,” Baker said with a shrug. “I don’t see why the admiral wouldn’t go along with it.”
