Chapter 22

Serena waited, dressed in the wet suit, sitting in the darkest corner of her room. She yawned. I surely don’t want to be asleep when Kai or Gabe or whomever shows up. I’d get no end of teased about sleeping on watch. Here we go to all this trouble to rescue you and you slept through it . . . I can just hear them and it’s going to be the sweetest thing in the world to do just that, hear them again.

She watched as the door to her room opened slowly. Someone dressed entirely in black came through and quickly closed it. “Child of my friends, are you here?” came a soft voice. “I and my brother Lucas are here to help. Remember the crystal cave.”

“What? Lucas? How did you get to England?”

“As soon as word went out that you were taken, your father called my sensei, and he sent us here. You have donned the wet suit. Good. It is a short swim to our boat.”

“How did you get in here to leave the wet suit?”

“We have our ways. Now, wait. My brother will give us the all clear for leaving the ship. You must walk like panther.”

“OK. But I never knew Lucas to go on maneuvers; I thought he was like the mastermind behind you guys.”

“He most certainly is and he does on occasion get out himself. He is not really ancient, you know.”

He went over to her computer. He studied it; then added a small memory chip to the side. He opened the lid, and turned it on. He put a small box on the top of the screen and suddenly there was a very realistic hologram of her sitting at the desk, flipping through her classes. The hologram seemed to move and be writing down things, then going back to work.

“That looks just like me.”

“Yes. We took pictures of you for a few hours and made a composite as the pieces of rescue were put in place.”

There was a soft scraping at the door.

“That will be Lucas,” he said. “Time to walk softly.” He led Serena to the door, opened it and they both stepped into the hallway where two more black dressed people waited. They all went up the stairs and were met by a fourth person. He led them to the far side of the boat where Serena was helped down a rope to the water. Each of them quietly descended then swam out and away from the ship in the dark.

Just about two hundred yards from the boat, the lead swimmer stopped; they all circled. Attached to the bay buoy was an inflatable boat. One detached it, stretched it out, pulled the cord, and it inflated. The swimmers all got inside. The four friends of her father detached oars from the side of the buoy and began to paddle in rhythm. About fifteen minutes later, there was a series of explosions behind them. Serena’s eyes got large.

“If it was all going
