Sebastian stood in the middle of William’s office, his gaze roaming the room. The walls were paneled with a dark wood, and floor-to-ceiling bookcases lined one full wall and half of another. The office’s lone window on the north side of the house let in anemic light. The large desk was almost too big for the size of the room. Between the dim light and the crowded conditions, the room felt claustrophobic. No wonder William would rather be out working with the men, rather than keeping the ranch accounts within these walls.

A sound from the hallway drew him around. A moment later, Jocelyn came through the doorway. Her gaze met his briefly, then lowered as she moved past him. She took a seat behind the desk before looking at him again.

“Shall we begin?” She pulled a ledger from a corner of the desk.

“Of course.” He moved a chair around to one side of the desk, the window at his back. “Just tell me what you need me to do.”

She flipped through a few pages of the book. Was she looking for information or avoiding meeting his gaze? He suspected the latter, and it made him smile. He’d known for some time that he wanted her to marry him, but he hadn’t been sure how to convince her she wanted the same. Perhaps it wouldn’t be as difficult as he’d feared. Perhaps he had cause to hope for a change of heart.

“Mr. Whitcombe?”

He blinked—and realized she’d asked a question before speaking his name. “Sorry,” he said. “Woolgathering.”

One of her brows cocked before she turned the chair toward the bookcase. Her fingers ran over the spines of numerous ledgers before she removed several from the shelf. Swiveling back to the desk, she set the books in front of Sebastian. “We must begin with inventory. We need an accurate accounting of cattle, horses, supplies. I wouldn’t mind knowing the number of chickens in the coop or how many cats and dogs are in the barn. Everything and anything we can count should be counted.”

“And that information is in these?” He opened the top ledger.

“It should be. But I doubt my brother has been thorough. For now, we will find as many details as possible. Inventory. Expenses. Income. Then we will go in search of whatever is not contained therein. Chuck will be able to help with all the food supplies. Jake Foster will help us with the livestock.”

“And what information does William have?”

She sighed as she shook her head. “I don’t know how things got away from him to this degree.”

“The ranch is in financial trouble?”

“Mmm.”

“How serious is it?”

She met his gaze, and he knew she was trying to decide how much to tell him. Of course, it wasn’t any of his business. That much was true. She had every right to tell him nothing, despite his offer of help. But the fate of Eden’s Gate mattered. To William. To Jocelyn. To everyone who lived and worked there. And it mattered to Sebastian.

“Jocelyn.” He said her name softly, encouragingly.
