Chapter 34

Eledon

The day after we’d discovered the blue tint in our samples, everyone was concentrating on data entry or studying slides when Vyrl let out a whoop. “Copper.” As he spun away from his desk, he almost fell off his stool, caught himself, and hoisted a test tube of light blue liquid in his hand. “The old solution was contaminated by copper.”

“How could that happen?” Isol asked. “I’m sure it was sealed properly when we opened it.”

“We’ll have to contact the supplier. Call the hospital and find out where this particular batch came from.”

“We don’t have telephones,” Isol pointed out.

“I can contact Lillith and she can ask Dr. Lyle directly for you,” Nan offered. “I know she talks to him fairly often.”

“She needs to talk to someone in the procurement department, or rather have Lyle do it.” Maun walked toward one of the bedrooms we’d converted into a storage room, waving Nan after her. “Come with me and I’ll get the batch number for you.”

Vyrl continued to shake the test tube at the rest of us. “We need to check all solution bottles, see if they have copper. What do you hypothesize from my information?”

Isol answered first. “Sara’s the only fem pregnant right now. She went away from Center for her honeymoon and the blood sample Dr. Grey pulled had some sort of anomaly in it that the copper reacted to which is gone now she’s pregnant.”

“And the other fymm have that same anomaly!” Penn followed Isol’s statement seamlessly, as if they’d discussed it before hearing Vyrl’s news. “The copper solution points it out to us.”

“And…” Gina determinedly added her thoughts. “…it doesn’t affect any of the homm samples in any way.”

“So, a hypothesis?” Vyrl’s voice was sharp and I could see he was pleased with their rapid analysis. Wish I could do that. But I will! One day.

“Too soon!” Isol said. “We need a whole lot more blue and not blue results before we can determine anything.” He always stated his ideas in a strange way, but I followed his reasoning.

“I think we need to change our interview questions.” Beth stood up to emphasize her words. “Some femm have had babies in the last few years. What do they have in common with Sara?”

I caught her gist. “We need to find the link, right?”

“Exactly!” Vyrl pointed at me. “Get those femm in here who’ve had children in the last…say…twenty years. Beth, set up your questions. The rest, back to work on something.”

When Maun and Nan returned, Vyrl caught them. “See if Lillith can get Lyle to send us copies of chemical research databases. We need to study copper and its effects.”

Nan and I knew we couldn’t do as Vyrl wanted: get the femm who had children to come to Eyrie for interviewing. Too hazardous with Center so stirred up from the film and Pildon’s agitation against humans. We talked with Maun and devised an alternate plan. Nan and I split the list and each went to interview the femm in their homes.
