Tiriam examined the control wand in his hand, frowning. “We had no idea the Starlightning had a D-per crewmember. Obviously. When you mentioned it, I requested a copy of their roster directly from Starbase Epsilon and it came back without Crispin’s name. Either he intercepted the transmission and adjusted it or… he adjusted it in Fleet’s assignments database.”

“Can he do that?”

The Harat-Shar shrugged. “I know as little as you do about D-pers, arii. There are only… three of them? Four? Something like that. Most of them do work for Fleet at some point, which is the limit of my knowledge about it; there was an article in the Fleet Eagle a while ago, and I remember thinking it was interesting. And I don’t know what to do about a missing D-per. Or rather, I don’t think we can do anything about it. He could have gone anywhere on the Alliance network, if I’m understanding things correctly.”

“If Gardenia was right, then you should be able to compel him to appear with that,” Cecil said, nodding at the wand.

“And do what?” Tiriam shook his head, setting the wand on the table between them. “I’m not running the inquest. Thank the Lion of Heaven. Interrogating the crew is a job for whomever’s investigating. Our job is delivering the ship, its crew, and the evidence to Starbase Omicron. And then hang around in case they want to ask me anything based on having known him when we were barely old enough to comb our forelocks.”

“Are they likely to do that?” Cecil asked, startled.

Tiriam grimaced. “Well, since there are no personal logs for them to consult from the Starlightning…”

“None??”

The Harat-Shar nodded. “I know. Last thing I expected either. I’m guessing Acron erased them before he locked himself in the medplex. That’ll be some poor minnow’s job to scrape out of the computer core when we turn the ship over.” He picked up the wand, rolled it between his fingers, then offered it to Cecil.

“Are you sure you don’t want to keep it?”

Tirian shook his head. “It belongs on the Starlightning with the rest of the evidence. The medplex has to stay locked, anyway, to preserve the scene. We’ll tell the team about it when we arrive at Epsilon, they’ll know what to do with it. Unless you do?”

“I’ll take care of it.”
