“THAT WAS … A remarkable experience,” Haymar said some time later.

“I know.” Dvorak grinned, and Haymar’s ears smiled back. Included with the vast amount of new knowledge and new information he’d acquired was a complete guide to both human and Sarthian physical and tonal modes of expression, and Doctor Maighread had been correct about how quickly accessible that knowledge would become.

“I remember when we first dove into the educators we’d captured from Thikair,” Dvorak continued. “It was like magic! The speed with which we could learn new stuff was absolutely astonishing to people who’d grown up without it. It took us a while to realize we hadn’t really ‘learned’ anything until we’d actually used the new knowledge, the new skills. And I think it was probably even more frustrating for us because we were adding such an enormous knowledge platform to the one we already had. We knew how to get around the old knowledge with—you should pardon the expression—the speed of thought. Finding the connections between that and the new knowledge was an unmitigated pain in the ass. One that was more than a little … frustrating upon occasion.”

“Oh my God.” The red-haired human Haymar now recognized as Lieutenant General Wilson, the brother of Pack Lord Dvorak’s mate, rolled his eyes. “Do you remember Karahalios? He was the damn poster boy for that kind of ‘frustration.’ That’s what made him such a pain in everybody else’s ass!”

“Fair’s fair, Rob. All of us were feeling our way into it. In fact, I seem to recall a certain Space Marine who set up a series of exercises to illustrate just how risky it was to rely on neural education where military skills were concerned.”

“Yes, I was pretty clever that way, wasn’t I?” General Wilson replied.

His tone was rather complacent, and Haymar’s ears laughed. But at the same time, he understood exactly what the humans were saying. And the fact that he could now recognize such finely nuanced human humor just as easily as he would have recognized it in another Shongair was another indication of just how much they had improved the neural education process.

But his ears flattened slightly as he thought about the other new knowledge he’d filed away.

He looked around the compartment. Dave Dvorak had been joined by his mate, two more of his sherhynas, General Wilson, Admiral Mallard, and almost a twelve more of his senior advisors and subordinates. And—Haymar’s eyes cut sideways for a moment—by the leader of the … beings, the “vampires,” who’d truly broken Thikair’s invasion force. And who, if Dvorak’s suspicions were correct, were the product of.…

“I see, now, I think, what you have in mind, Pack Lord,” he said soberly. “You are clearly a human who relishes monumental challenges.”

“First, you do understand that although I may be your hyrsara, I’m definitely not the ruler of my own people and that you, as my tukaras, are subject to the same laws that I am? And that our desire is to include the
