Chapter 15

They collected Torin’s car. Matt told them it was better if he drove to the ranch. Ryder opened the rear door for Torin and rode shotgun. On the ride to the ranch, Ryder remembered they’d have to go past his father’s land. The urge to see his father grew stronger, the closer they came.

“Do you know Hunter Lucore?” Ryder asked Matt, gazing out the window. Thankful for the clear air, trees, and the smell of nature. Seeing fields and land he recognized seemed to settle him. He began to believe he could do this, be in this time if he stayed close to the familiar, weaned himself back into modern life.

“Yes, we went to school together. You look like him. Are you cousins?”

“I think I might be his uncle, if his pa is called Hunter too.”

“I don’t know what his father’s real name is, but everyone around here just calls him Cory.”

Ryder’s heart began to race. He’d forgotten his brother’s pet name. “Cory, yeah, that’s him. Can we have this window open?” Matt told him to press the button in the door. Ryder did as he was told and let down the window. He needed the wind in his hair and on his face. Being inside the car was stifling. “I should go and see them?”

“I don’t want to be a buzzkill, and you say you don’t want to talk about it. But do you really think you can go up to Hunter’s dad and say ‘Hi, I’m your brother?’ I mean look at you. You don’t look that much older than his son.” He glanced over at Ryder.

“Me and RJ grew up on the bizarre. We’ve lived with your empty room and your name in the family crypt all our lives, not being allowed to talk about it with anyone else, waiting for your return. But I don’t think anyone else has, do you?”

Torin tapped Ryder on the shoulder. “Tell him, tell him everything. Seems to me you owe him that much.”

Ryder gazed at her for a moment then nodded. “Pull over.”

Matt brought the car to a stop at the side of the road. Between them, Ryder and Torin told Matt everything, sharing with him some of the contents of their letters and showing him the pictures.

When they’d finished, Matt said, “It shouldn’t, but it all makes sense. I should be freaked out, but I’m not. I’ve run so many different scenarios past RJ when we were growing up, but time travel wasn’t one of them. Still, you need to have a plan for visiting your family. Hunter is getting married to the mayor’s daughter this weekend. They’re expecting family from all over. Why don’t I find out who’s not coming, and who they haven’t seen in a while, and don’t know anything about. You just turning up could get awkward.”

Against Ryder’s better judgment, coupled with the fact that Torin agreed with Matt, Ryder decided to wait.

When they got to the ranch, Ryder stepped out of the car and opened the rear door for Torin.
