Chapter 13

"Thank you for the tub and warm water. I will never take being able to bathe for granted ever again."

Her voice coming from behind startled him. He'd been intent on setting enough food out for the animals, and hadn't heard her come outside. He threw the last bit of hay onto the pile and turned to face her.

His breath caught when he saw her standing there in the new clothes he'd put out for her. They were some he'd had for a while. He hoped they would fit her a little better than what she'd been wearing. The shirt was a plaid pattern, and she had the sleeves rolled up and the top button undone. He swallowed hard, wondering how she could not only walk around wearing men's clothes like it was no big deal, but then also leave any parts of her skin exposed?

Any woman he'd ever known would likely have fainted on the spot at the suggestion.

The pants were still too big as well, but she'd used the rope again to tie them and hold them up. They were rolled up at the bottom, with her boots peeking out beneath the cuff.

But the part that stole his breath from his lungs was her smile. The woman was more beautiful than anyone he'd ever seen before in his life. And she'd been put through hell, thanks to him, but still stood here smiling at him and thanking him for something as simple as a warm bath.

"Sorry I didn't have any nice smelling soap for you to use." He felt uncomfortable being thanked, considering he didn’t have any modern indoor plumbing or the conveniences he’d heard tell they had in the big cities. Some places even had indoor water closets. He wasn’t sure how that worked but it sounded pretty fancy.

She laughed. "Trust me, I would have been happy with nothing more than warm water to get some of the layers of dust and dirt off. The soap you had was fine." She moved her head to look past him to where Mollie was running around the pen.

"Are you sure they'll all be okay here while we’re gone?"

He smiled to himself at hearing her say “we,” as though she was just going into town for a few hours and would be back.

"I hope so. It's about half a day’s ride to get you to Heartsbridge if we don't push the horses too much. We could likely get there a bit quicker if you can ride as well as you say you can." Something pressed against his leg, and she smiled as her eyes watched.

"I think someone will miss you when you're gone." Mollie was pushing her muzzle against his leg, trying to get his attention. She'd become quite attached to him since her attack, and he did worry about how she'd be when he was gone. But he didn't want Charlotte to worry too.

"I won't be long. Once I get you with your brother, I can ride a bit faster and be back here before sundown.
