I go to Paris, I go to London, I go to Rome, and I always say there’s no place like New York. It’s the most exciting city in the world now. That’s the way it is. That’s it.

—Robert de Niro

AS THE FIRST NORTH AMERICAN city I journeyed to by myself at age eighteen, New York holds a special place within my solo travel affections. With limited finances during my first night in North America, I stayed in a very seedy, but centrally located, hotel. At that time, New York suffered from a poor reputation. It was run down, neglected, and crime ridden. I recently performed an Internet search to find out if the hotel was still in existence. It is—complete with a litany of online complaints about bed bugs. While the quality of this hotel seems not to have improved over the last thirty years, the same cannot be said for the overall city itself. During subsequent visits I have been impressed with how the Big Apple has cleaned up its act. New York improves year by year: it’s cleaner, more polite, and much less threatening than it was when I first encountered it. Reported crime is lower than it has been for years. So it is now the perfect place for the street-smart single woman to visit.

But this single babe needs money, as New York is anything but cheap. With so many things on a “to-do” list, this girl also requires energy and a precise agenda to make sure she gets the maximum benefit. The city attracts over fifty-five million visitors a year—not surprising when you examine what’s offered. World-renowned architecture such as the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, and Statue of Liberty compete for precious time with internationally acclaimed galleries such as the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim. Areas like Greenwich Village, Times Square, and Central Park call for attention, as do the Brooklyn Bridge, Wall Street, and hundreds of theatrical productions both on and off Broadway. And don’t even get me started on the shopping. Any excursion to this wonderful city requires detailed planning, energy, and an acceptance that if all goes according to plan, another visit will be required in the not-too-distant future.
