Create an intention for your practice
When I first started yoga and heard a teacher say âset an intention for your practiceâ I had absolutely no idea what they were talking about. I wasnât sure what kind of intention I was supposed to have and then I was worried that I didnât have the right kind of intention. An intention is another way of taking back some control and finding a focus for your practice â something that guides you through your practice, especially if it becomes difficult. It can be another way of anchoring into the present moment. In fact, staying present for the time that I am on my mat is often my intention, because staying present is sometimes the hardest part of my yoga practice. Maybe your focus or intention might be to stay with your breath for the full 5 minutes or to be grateful for your breath, or maybe there is something else that motivated you to get onto your mat and practise yoga? What was your purpose for practising or what is your desire for your practice? What do you need more of today? What helps you feel inspired to practise or is there something you would like to embody as you move?
Your intention might be something you come back to throughout your practice or throughout your day. Maybe you find it is motivating to have an intention or that the practice has greater meaning because it animates the practice and focuses it? Your intention may be different depending on the time of day you practise. A morning practice with the whole day ahead might require a different focus to an evening practice where your intention might be to let go of the day that has been and prepare for sleep. The same sequence or practice can have a different outcome if you set an intention or a focus for it and you can explore by observing how this feels and if this gives your practice more depth.
