CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2036 - 4:05 PM - McKnight’s office, Telegraph Road, Alexandria, Virginia

McKnight sat at his desk and tried not to rub the fresh wound on his left thigh. The surgeon did a good job installing the pea, but it itched like crazy.

He chuckled. The surgeon warned him not to exercise that leg for a while. Stay off your feet he said.

Sure. Right before a mission.

He turned around in his chair and set his feet up on the credenza. He clicked the wall remote to turn it from opaque to transparent.

Robby told him the mission management app was up and running. He helped Kathy load everyone’s pea with the mission database. McKnight pulled out his phone and brought up the mission management app. After a few taps, he found all the previous missions.

He accessed one of his early test missions and read through the brief report. The report took a long time to type; he remembered. He found an update button and added a test update. It worked perfectly.

This app is going to save me an enormous amount of time. Robby, you rock!

He pulled up the mission list and scanned it. There were more than a hundred missions on the list, including the original testing missions. He took part in most of them.

Have we done so much in the last two years? It seems longer than that.

A knock on the door behind him jarred him out of his reverie.

He kicked off the credenza to spin back around, and a twinge of pain from the pea incision was his reward. Dammit! Wish I hadn’t done that.

“Come in,” he said.

The door opened. Drake and Robert Astalos stood there. McKnight came to attention and saluted. Ouch! Don’t move so fast.

“Hi, Marc,” Astalos said, and turned to Drake. “I understand Robby’s here, so I’ll see you later.” He waved at McKnight and walked down the hall.

Drake entered the office. “As you were,” he said. “Are you alright?”

“Yes, sir. Why?”

“You seemed unsteady when you got up just now.”

“Oh, no, I’m fine, sir. We all had new technology implanted today, so I’m still recovering.”

“Ah,” Drake said. “Robby’s pea.”

“You knew about that?”

“Robert briefed me on the way back from the White House. He and Robby worked on it for a while. What do you think?”

“I’ll know more after we do field tests, but it looks promising.”

“Good,” Drake said. For a few moments, the General stared at the desk between him and McKnight.

Uncomfortable with the silence, McKnight said, “How was your meeting with the Vice President, sir?”

“I’ll let you be the judge of that, Marc. In short, Vice President Crumpton approved our mission to abort the Kosar kidnapping, but with conditions. As you know, he isn’t a fan and doesn’t want us to make decisions without his input.”

“His input? Excuse me, sir, but what does that mean?”

Drake nodded. “Years ago, we fought that way in the Mideast. Our rules of engagement were to protect ourselves, but don’t take any offensive action without orders, and wait for the orders from the Oval Office.
