CHAPTER 24

The curtains whipped and billowed in an early morning wind, and Kate snapped awake. It was cold, and she left the bed, crossing the room in haste, shutting the window and scurrying back to the bed, feeling cozy under the warmth of the quilt. For minutes, she lay on her back, staring up at the ceiling, her mind muddled.

As all her other dreams had faded, one had not. It was a strange and disturbing dream that clung to her eyes. She’d been an elderly woman in her seventies, living in New York City. Her husband was dead, but she had two children. What were their names? A son named Greg. She couldn’t recall her daughter’s name. The dream had been clear, immediate and tangible, and as real as anything she’d ever experienced.

In her closet, Kate found a light gray top, jeans, and sneakers. As she dressed, the same troubling dream blinked in and out of her mind, a clear picture one minute, but then staticky and out of focus the next, as if wires were crossed.

Kate was in the kitchen early. The yellow wall clock said it was 6:17 a.m. She should have slept more, but the dream had startled her awake. As she made coffee in the percolator, she was shaky, increasingly concerned that she was losing her mind.

When her father entered the kitchen, she was staring into her Cheerios, trying to make sense of her life and dreams.

“Good morning,” Oliver said, dressed in a white shirt, tie, and charcoal suit. “You’re up early. I thought you’d sleep in.”

“Weird dreams,” Kate said.

Oliver reached for a cup and poured himself some coffee. “I know what you mean. I didn’t sleep so well either. I called the hospital a few minutes ago, and the night nurse said your mother slept well. Dr. Banks will look in on her first thing.”

Kate looked at her father peculiarly, and he noticed.

“Yes? What is it, Kate?”

Kate had a sudden flash of the cave—of her bursting out of the cave and of seeing herself young again. Kate stared ahead at the wall as if seeing the cave projected there.

“What is it, Kate? What’s happened?”

In that instant, her memory returned. She had time traveled! She hadn’t dreamed she was a 74-year-old woman, she had been a 74-year-old woman! But she was losing it, forgetting—and she couldn’t forget!

“Kate…” her father pressed, his eyes opening on her, round and wide. “What is wrong?”

Kate didn’t meet his eyes as she stuttered out the words. “I’m… I just need… I guess… I need to see Mom, that’s all. And then I have to get back to school. I realized something. Something I have to do.”

Oliver blew the steam from his coffee. “Kate… you’re all right, aren’t you? You’re not taking… taking any drugs, are you? They’re everywhere, these days. Please tell me…”

Kate cut him off, her response quick. “No, Dad. No. Nothing like that. I don’t take drugs.”

He eased down in the chair opposite her. “You seem, well, a bit erratic and not quite yourself.
