Capturing the Bataan Peninsula and Corregidor opened the way to Manila.

American soldiers followed the railroad tracks leading into Manila, passing by fallen Japanese soldiers.

Paratroopers were key to taking Corregidor. Members of the 503rd Regiment dropped behind enemy lines, cleared out the island’s defensive barriers, and helped open the harbor to the Allied fleet.

Although the Allies would eventually win, fighting on Corregidor was man-to-man and inch by inch.

During the 1942 siege of Corregidor, the Malinta Tunnel was used by the Americans. It would not survive when the Allies returned in 1945.
