Chapter twenty

Finley

I bang on Erin’s front door. They must know I’m here, given their security, but it takes a few minutes for someone to respond.

Erin leads me through the house to the dining room where they hold their meetings. The way she moves screams exhaustion. I wonder if she got any sleep.

At the table are Ollie and JT. Mark’s sitting at the open window, smoking.

‘Where are the other new arrivals?’ I ask.

‘Sleeping,’ Erin says. ‘We’ve made arrangements for them to join Lara in Scotland while we’re figuring everything out.’

‘You shouldn’t be telling him everything.’ Mark stubs out a cigarette in the ashtray on the windowsill.

‘Leave him alone.’ Erin lets out an exhausted breath and sits in a chair at the head of the table. ‘We’ve got a shitload of work to do, and we don’t have time for teenage dramatics.’

Mark stands. ‘You’ve no idea what you’re getting into, boy.’

‘I’m on board.’

‘You’re on her more like,’ he snipes. ‘You better be prepared for what that means in the future. When this war starts’—Mark points at Erin—‘that girl’s family is going to be the prime targets. You keep this relationship up and you won’t even be able to stick around and help.’

‘Hang on,’ JT says. ‘Erin hooked up with Garvey’s bestie? Can’t wait for that firework to go off.’

I playing this cool. I’ll show a bunch of insurgents from the future who recently introduced me to a whole new world that I’m not fazed by this kind of goading.

Mark looks at Erin. ‘He’s going to have to abandon you, one way or another. Garvey isn’t going to let him hang around you in the future. Question is, are you going to leave with him?’ He takes a step towards Erin.

Erin looks like she is chewing on her anger. Her posture is rigid, and she’s staring Mark down without blinking. ‘Sit down,’ she says. Turning to me, her face softens. ‘We’ve filled JT and the others in on where we are and our progress at finding a way home. JT was just getting us caught up on what happened after we left our time.’

‘That was it.’ JT entwines his fingers with Ollie’s and leans back into his seat. ‘Blake and Garvey searched the house and the land for you after they finished their recon and found nothing. No big fight or destruction. You simply disappeared.’

‘The same amount of time has passed for them at home as it has for us here,’ Ollie tells me. ‘That fits into a theory I have about the timelines continuously moving. Why this one wants to speed up to get us back where we should be.’

JT says, ‘Your dad went crazy trying to find you. He never gave up—he still hasn’t. A lot of people are assuming you lot are dead.’ He looks at Ollie. ‘It was something we had to consider. That you all got in an accident of some sort. We had to search for bodies. Garvey couldn’t find anything that said you were dead or captured and when no one ever came with a ransom, people were telling us we had to move on.
