Chapter 23

Doyle sped through downtown Oklahoma City, blasting Five Finger Death Punch through the speakers, banging his head to the beat. His heart was hammering in his chest, prompting him to crank up the music to drown it out.

The cameras all around town were on him. He could feel them watching like a stalker hiding around the corner, waiting to pounce. Were Arielle and her goons hunting him down? Had the authorities been dispatched to assist?

Tears streaked down Doyle’s face as he bit his bottom lip.

Fucking Arielle, he thought. She arrived way too early. It wasn’t supposed to be this rushed.

“Damn you, little miss perfect!” he screamed over Ivan Moody’s manic howling.

He had at least gotten away with three murders in 1898 but was staring at only one completed job in this futuristic hellhole. The next two victims were already chosen, but he had no way of knowing where to find them at this precise moment. And for Doyle, one thing had become overwhelmingly clear during the past hour. He needed to get out of this year.

But Doyle was a man of structure and intense planning. He’d even had the backup plan of how he was going to dump Rowland’s body in case he needed to rush. Which he did. Fucking Arielle.

Yet, he never planned for Arielle’s arrival so soon. Being a time-traveling serial killer had proven more complex than originally expected. 1898 was difficult because of how small the town was. He might have been able to hang around longer if he had chosen a place like New York City where he could easily hide and not every single person knew him by name.

And while these big cities in the future had drastically reduced populations, he couldn’t step foot outside a fucking restaurant without being spotted on camera. And from what he had learned about the Quantum Works software, his face was likely already arranged to trigger alarms if it showed up anywhere around the city.

I can’t just leave here. Not yet. Not with two more kills to make. It was supposed to be three in each city. Three at each stop.

Doyle squeezed the steering wheel and pulled off the road, not even sure where he was. He had only been pressing on the gas pedal as hard as he could, swerving around corners, blasting through red lights. No. Fucks. Given.

His chest heaved, sweat breaking out on his forehead.

Am I dying? he wondered. Drawing in breath suddenly felt like an extreme task. He let go of the steering wheel to find his hands quivering beyond control and had to make a conscious effort to lower the music’s volume. He gasped. The walls in the car were closing in on him. Around his destiny. I can’t be dying. This is not how I leave this fucked up world.

Doyle fidgeted with the switch to roll down the window, couldn’t get a hold of it, then flung open the entire door. The chilly night air splashed across his face, bringing immediate relief. A car drove by, blaring its horn at him for hanging out halfway in the road.
