18 THE HOURGLASS KILLER

The sky has cleared somewhat from my morning at the cemetery, and there are birds flittering about the park.

It is near my home, and I used to bring my daughter here when she was young. I like to stop by on days I am feeling extra sentimental and remember the good times.

How different my life is now than when I was a husband and father.

This week alone, I took the lives of two victims just days apart.

A sense of calm has washed over me as I consider the work I've done, as I contemplate my next move. I am on a mission surely, and I'm not going to stop any time soon. If I want to make an impact on this world, I can't give up. I can't let the effort it takes to complete each act derail me.

I am teaching a light load this semester which helps because honestly, everything that goes in to murdering someone is a bit intensive. Of course, I am accelerating the whole process. I choose a victim, and within days I take their life. I’m not a sicko who fetishes drawing the process out. I simply go with my instincts.

I look at the rather fit, older woman with gray hair. She has fifteen years on me, easy. Some people might think of an older woman at a park as a sweet grandmotherly type, but I can tell by watching her, she's anything but.

She keeps looking at her watch, glancing at her adult daughter and then down at the children running around them in circles. You’d think this woman would watch her grandkids joyfully, yet she sits ramrod straight and checks her watch every thirty seconds. Her daughter leans in to give her what looks like a stern talking-to. The woman rolls her eyes and turns her head from her daughter.

They're only a few feet from me, so I can hear what they are saying.

"I don't understand why you can't just help me, Mom. I've got to go on this work trip and land the promotion. It's the only way I'm going to be able to be around more often. The job would be remote.” The older woman still won’t look her daughter in the eye. “You know how hard it's been since Luke left. I'm carrying all the weight of the kids on my own. And I love them, Mom. You know I do, but it's so hard to balance that with being away so often. I hate going into the office. If I could work from home and take the kids to school every morning, make them breakfast, and lunches, and be there at the end of the day, God, it'd be a dream. "She looks over at her children. Her eyes are glassy with emotion but her mouth quirks up into a smile. "And look, Mom, they're growing up so fast. I don't want to miss any of it."

The older woman lets out an exasperated sigh and turns back to her daughter.
