Eleven

In some faint distance she heard a bird chirping and smiled, though she refused to open her eyes and give up the wonderful dream. She felt the warmth behind her and arched her back against it, rubbing her bottom in exquisite pleasure against the firm pressure. Heat permeated her skin where this dream lover spooned her and she felt so protected, so secure in the strong arm that wrapped around her. She imagined taking his hand resting at her waist and raising it up to cup her breast. She pressed the strong, warm hand on her breast and again she arched her back. Hearing herself moaning with such pleasure at the searing contact, a tiny part of her began to realize this dream was becoming too vivid, and it would soon end.

Disappointment was mixed with a revelation. In that half-awake state, Kelly saw how she had missed this intimacy and was now opening to it again. Dear God, it had been so long since she’d felt like this. Even if it was just a dream, then she must be preparing herself to reenter the relationship arena through her dreams and . . .

Wait a minute. She could feel legs, skin and hair on those legs behind her own, since her nightgown had risen to her upper thighs sometime during the night. Hair . . . real hair! She ran her fingers over the hand beneath her own then peeked with one eye to see a strong male hand at her chest! With nearly a jolt, she drew in a quick breath and looked away.

Blinking, she stared at the wall and, not recognizing it either, she looked back down to the hand cupping her breast. Dear God, this wasn’t a dream! This hand was real! Real!

Her brain seemed to crash, unable to integrate the bizarre situation.

“Good morning, Kelly.”

A low rough voice whispered behind her head, and she stopped breathing as she slowly turned her face toward it. This can’t be happening! It can’t! Yet her senses could no longer deny the actuality. Daniel was right up against her and smiling sleepily.

“Oh my God,” she exhaled while scrambling away from him to her edge of the mattress. “I am so sorry! I . . . I thought I was dreaming and . . . I didn’t realize. Please . . .” She clutched the covers to her chin and stared widely back at him. “I didn’t mean to—”

“Don’t apologize. You were sleeping so soundly, I didn’t have the heart to wake you. In all fairness, I should be the one apologizing to you,” he said with a boyish smile, then quickly added, “But really, I don’t think either of us should be held responsible for what happened in our sleep.” He sat up, running his hands through his dark hair, and yawned.

“That’s right,” she said, pulling the cover up tighter against her neck. “We were sleeping. At least, I was. So, it doesn’t mean anything.”

He laughed. “Don’t sound so relieved, madam… you injure my pride.
