Ellesmere Port: The town of Ellesmere Port is just south of the Wirral. Its port once handled ships on the Mersey but was cut off from its shores with the construction of the Manchester Ship Canal. The former warehouses are now home to the National Waterways Museum, dedicated to the history of canal building in the UK, and the dock features historic boats at various stages of restoration, such as barges, narrowboats and tugs. The museum lies alongside the Shropshire Union Canal and narrowboat cruises are offered in the tourist season (www.canalrivertrust.org.uk). Other attractions in Ellesmere Port include the huge Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet shopping complex and the Blue Planet Aquarium, which has one of the largest collections of sharks in Europe (www.blueplanetaquarium.com).
