Kilometers were ground beneath marching infantry. Tanks, their massive bulks hovering a meter off the ground thanks to magnetic engines, were fanned in wide wedges well in front of the column, screening for signs of the enemy. Light rains turned the dirt roads to mud, that and the steady churn of thousands of boots from those unable to mount transports. It was an armored snake, winding across the countryside.

Mobus stood atop his vehicle absorbing the sight. A proud parent about the product of his labor reaching maturity. This was where he truly felt at ease. Lost amid battle. Men like Mobus weren’t born to languish behind a desk, toiling their precious hours away without ambition. He needed glory to achieve his full potential. Needed the sting of combat to find fulfillment. What was life but a means to the end?

The prospect of living in a universe devoid of violence frightened him. He’d known his purpose from a young age. Torment became a childhood staple. Mobus suffered an abusive father and an absentee mother. He was the product of their neglect and was fine with that. Their abuse sparked what he knew to be greatness. After all, wasn’t history the continuation of great men? Weakness was a disease in need of stamping out. No one remembered the weak. He’d long ago decided that the best way forward was by carving out his own legacy.

The whining click of the intercom stole his attention. Reluctantly, Mobus acknowledged the transmission. The voice wasn’t the one he wanted to hear, but the one he expected. Scowling, the newly promoted general sighed and answered. “Yes, Inquisitor General.”

Alain Nye’s voice had become as poison to his ears. Mobus was coming to despise the man responsible for his ascension, while regarding him as a necessary accomplice. Their symbiotic relationship benefited Nye more than Mobus. A fact in need of addressing once the campaign on the low continent concluded.

“General Kale, it is my understanding that you have located the last of the cultists and are preparing to engage,” Nye stated. His matter of fact tone was infuriating.

How in the fuck does he know that? Mobus suspected he had a mole burrowed into his command structure. “Forward elements are already drawing the cultists in. I anticipate finishing them off within the next two days.”

“It seems a casual waste of life when naval assets are available,” Nye scolded. “Prudence suggests we will have need of every man and woman in uniform in order to initiate the next phase of our operations.”

“Prudence does not forge steel. The cult of Rengu must be taught a lesson here. Seeing the lengths we will go to extinguish their disease will give other cells pause. They will dissipate or go underground. I do not expect them to be much of a threat once word of what happens here spreads to other planets.”

“Such would prove true if the Conclave managed to exercise more direct control over local populations. The Inquisition is already stretched thin, as are resources. The rebellion is much larger than previously believed.
