Chapter 20
The following day I text Martha and tell her that I plan to go to Palmyra to get her stuff. She responds by asking me to let her know when I arrive at the house so that she can open the door for me. I hope the app works. Iâve never seen it in use, and Iâll feel a bit daft if I end up standing on the step unable to get inside.
Erin, Sheedy and I talk about the visit at breakfast, which is served in a bright room that overlooks the garden.
âDo you want us to come with you?â asks Erin as she loads a dollop of Seville marmalade onto a slice of toast.
âI assumed you would.â I look at her in surprise.
âWe thought you might prefer to do it alone,â she says.
I shake my head. âIâd rather have company,â I say. âIâm not sure how Iâll feel.â
âWhatever you want,â Sheedy says.
âThank you.â I give them both a grateful smile. âThanks for everything, girls. For supporting me. For coming with me. For being around.â
âAll for one, remember?â says Sheedy.
I smile at her.
âWill we head over after breakfast?â asks Erin.
âSure.â I hesitate slightly.
âWhat?â Sheedy looks at me.
âBefore we go to the house, Iâd like to go to the scene of the accident,â I say.
âOh, Delphie! Are you sure? Isnât that a bit morbid?â asks Erin.
âMaybe,â I concede. âBut thereâs something in me that needs to see where it happened. Iâd like to be able to tell Martha I went too.â
âMartha isnât really your concern,â says Sheedy.
âShe kind of is,â I counter. âIâm already getting her stuff. Iâd like to be able to say that I . . . well, that I paid my respects at the scene.â
âIf you must.â Erin looks concerned.
âItâs a closure thing,â I tell her. âThereâs a part of me that thinks heâs not really gone. That itâs some sort of cosmic joke. That heâll turn up and fix everything. Give me my job back. Make me a director. Be there for me again. Until I see where it happened, I canât stop myself thinking that way.â I rub the back of my neck, where tension I havenât felt all week is suddenly building up. âI used to think it was really weird of people to want to go to the place where a loved one died, but now I understand it.â
âA loved one?â Erin gives me a quizzical look.
âI didnât love him,â I assure her. âOf course not. But he was an important person in my life and I . . . I cared about him.â
âOK.â She folds her napkin and drops it on the table. âLetâs go.â
âYou havenât finished your coffee yet.â
She drains the cup and grins at me.
âNow I have.â
We get up from the table and leave.
Iâm wearing a long-sleeved tunic top over my shorts because even though itâs not yet 10.30, the sun is high in the cloudless blue sky and I want to protect the arms that I managed to burn by falling asleep at the pool the other evening.
