In the upshot it didn’t seem to make much odds, over the next few days, whether he got to work on time or not; he seemed to be dodging out again almost as soon as he arrived.

To his amazement, everybody else in the firm—Shapson, O’Dea, Myra Perez, his department colleagues, and even total strangers from far-off sections of the operation such as the chemical-testing and biology labs—took a keen interest in his progress, sympathizing with him when he came back from taking his immunization shots feeling like a pincushion and with an angry flush over half his body, suggesting places and things he ought not to miss during his trip, asking minor favors such as that he should bring back a bottle of genuine potheen (that was O’Dea, of course) or a pack of deep-frozen Yorkshire pudding (that was Shapson, whom Joel had never suspected of being a gourmet). He felt himself blossoming in spite of the bombardment of junk mail, which by Tuesday night reached epidemic proportions. When he opened his apartment door after taking Myra to dinner and bed—a major breakthrough—he discovered Bertrand immobilized and furious. One of the clients of International Additives had sent him a sample of a new climatic grease designed to insulate the skin of visitors to countries with unpredictable weather like Britain’s; the container had come unstoppered in transit, and all six of Bertrand’s wheels were skidding in a pool much more slippery than ice.

It was quite true about the autonome’s objurgation program. It was exhaustive. Although it was now twenty-three hundred hours, and Bertrand had been stuck since noon, the sequence had not yet started to repeat.
