Chapter 19

Idlewild

A faint tapping came from the glass pane on Tandy’s bedroom window. She glanced at the wind-up alarm clock, a generational relic handed down from her great-great-great grandmother, then sighed. She’d been expecting him. Her traitorous heart fluttered, and her knees felt like overcooked spaghetti.

Falling in love with a Whitaker boy was perhaps the stupidest thing a female living in Idlewild could do. The risk Brock took by sneaking into town proved he returned her devotion. It also underscored his skill. Very few people could enter Idlewild under the radar. That devotion transcended mere lust on both parts, although the earth-scorching physical attraction played an undeniable part. Their instant connection at the moonshine barter last year had felt like the final two pieces of an exquisitely complicated puzzle snapping into place.

It was probably a past-life attachment, Tandy decided, impossible to deny or ignore and profoundly dangerous for them both. Moreso for him, though, sneaking into Idlewild for a stolen hour of passion with Silas’s main squeeze. Brock would be executed if caught, while she could always play dumb.

Nobody played dumb better than Tandy.

Still, the heart wants what the heart wants. She’d probably die an early death because of the boy, but maybe their next life together would prove less arduous.

She lifted the window and watched her lover crawl into the darkened bedroom. They didn’t need light; their hands and mouths quickly found each other. No words were spoken for the next half hour.

Finally, the time came to address Brock’s grief. Tandy doubted anyone was good at conversations like these, including her. “I know about your father. I saw Wyatt and Levi talking about it earlier. I’m sorry, my love. I can’t imagine what you’re feeling. Did you know it was going to happen? Like the other things you’ve seen beforehand?”

He nodded against her neck.

“That must have felt like an elephant sitting on your chest. You didn’t say anything to him before?”

“I couldn’t. I didn’t want to jinx him in case I was wrong. I know that sounds weird, but that’s how it works sometimes. Sometimes I ... misinterpret.”

“You’ve always had the gift?”

Another nod. “It comes and goes, but I wouldn't call it a gift.”

Tandy possessed many talents, but precognition wasn’t one of them. She let the silence linger as she imagined knowing about events before they happened.

Limbs still entwined, Brock murmured in her ear, “Do you want to get rid of Levi once and for all?”

“Don’t tease me,” she whispered. “That man is a sticky booger. There’s no getting rid of him.”

She felt Brock’s muffled laugh against her ear. Was there anything sweeter than shared amusement with one’s true love? She smiled in the dark, knowing she’d alleviated his sadness at least for a moment.

“I have a plan,” he said, serious again.

“If it involves putting yourself in danger, I won’t allow it.”

“It does, but it’ll be worth it. Think of all the little girls who won’t be assaulted before they’ve put on their first training bra.”

Next to being with Brock, there was nothing she wanted more than the death of Idlewild’s resident pedophile.
