Chapter Thirteen
Thor
His little two-leg had followed him up in the trees as Thor trotted through the bush but for once, hadnât thrown anything at him. When he crossed a stream, however, the animal quit pacing him. He stopped and looked back, but the two-leg simply perched on a branch and watched him silently.
Achille had told him to stay that morning before he left and he hadâ¦kind of. He hadnât followed his friend, at least. But how far did stay allow him to go?
Thor decided that it allowed him to go back to the place where the young humans were. He was curious about them and he had nothing else to do with Achille gone. He might as well satisfy his curiosity.
Finding the place was easy. He had a firm grasp of location and could navigate anywhere after heâd been there once. Unlike the Zoo, this place didnât change on a daily basis, which made it even easier.
There were fewer animals the closer he got to the humans. Patches of ground had been cleared of the native vegetation and planted in smooth, even rows, which almost hurt his sensibilities after the chaos of the Zoo and the haphazard patterns around Achilleâs home.
Twice, smaller hornless versions of what looked like him ran out to challenge his passage. One barked twice, thought better of it, and slunk away, his tail between his legs. Another one, mangy and ragged, maintained a tirade of barking and remained a little ahead of him while he passed the field. It somehow reminded him of the small two-legâall bluster but never straying too close.
Thor could have reached the little guy in one pounce, but it wouldnât be worth the effort. It would only make an appetizer, but the real reason he didnât was because he rather admired the animalâs spunk.
As he moved closer to his destination, he began to identify sounds. He couldnât understand them, but some of them had a sense of urgency about them. More than a little curious, he wondered what that meant but his attention was drawn by a cry off to his left.
He stopped and swung his head from side to side between the direction of the cry and the place ahead with the human friends. The cry could be any number of animals, and his destination was the human place. He dismissed the cry and began to trot ahead when the wind shifted and brought him the scent of a human intermixed with the sharp, pungent scent of something different. He recalled that Achille had called it a hyena. In this case, several of them, he realized quickly.
Thor spun on his hind legs, reoriented, and raced away. A howl burst from his chest and reverberated through the bush. The hyenas smelled of the hunt and the human smelled of fear.
It was an easy equation. The human was friend because Achille said so. The hyenas were not. The ranger had made it clear that he was not supposed to hunt any of the animals around them, so they werenât food and he had no animosity toward them.
