The moment we stop, I follow Oleta out of the truck and over to where there are trees. Renee and Amelia hover at the back of the truck.
“Seriously?” Oleta stares at me. “You’re going to watch me piss?”
“No.” I glare at her.
“Then what are you doing? Because I already said I’m desperate to go.”
I glare at her. “What are you doing? Why are you telling Amelia and Renee everything? And please tell me you’re joking when you said we’re avoiding the assassins now?”
She raises one eyebrow, then turns away.
“Hey? What are you doing?”
“Trying to find some privacy,” she snaps back. “We can have this conversation once my bladder is no longer screaming.”
She retreats into the cover of trees, and I wait. When she emerges again, she’s smiling sweetly.
“Well?” I fold my arms.
“We have to be honest with our group.”
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
“One of us has to be honest. We have to tell Amelia and Renee everything. Tell me, Inga, when are you going to tell them your own sister is the assassins’ leader? That dear old Gweneira is the new Bridie?”
I breathe hard. “Don’t say her name,” I growl.
“Because you’re pretending it’s not true?” Her voice is high-pitched. She’s mocking me.
I swallow hard.
“We need to be honest,” Oleta says. “Honesty is how we survive.”
“But telling them about the assassins is just going to stop us killing any more of them.”
“Which is good.”
“What?” I shake my head. “Amelia and Renee are not in listening distance now. We can make plans.”
“We have no plans. Except to protect the children.” Her voice is sharp, loaded, and I don’t understand it.
My eyes narrow. “What is going on? All that talk before about killing all the assassins? But now you don’t want to—you’re just interested in the children.”
“Yes, children are the future. And these ones are weak at the moment. I bet they don’t know shit. Not properly. They won’t know how to fight, how to protect themselves, so we have to keep them alive and with us. Safety is in numbers, and we will teach them to be the best fighters and survive.”
I inhale sharply. “No.” I shake my head. “We’re not using any children against the assassins.” I frown. That’s why she wanted to get the children? “No. We’re not stooping to Bridie’s level. I mean it. These children are free of that life, of any fighting, now.”
Oleta laughs. “How naive are you?”
Her question unnerves me, because danger and power radiate from her body in waves. Waves that are threatening me, and I don’t understand her agenda.
“What do you want?” I frown. She’s dangerous, I know that. Of course she is! We both are. All assassins that Bridie trained are. But Oleta and I are more dangerous; Bridie selected us because of our Rijikarii energies. We’re strong and dangerous, and we deal in death.
I can’t sense Rijikarii myself, but something tells me it’s swelling in Oleta, getting stronger and stronger. And soon, it will burst. I frown. I need a Watcher Doll.
