I sat down with my notebook, my cats, and Eddy to have a pre-dinner meeting. Our amazing host put us into one of his private dining rooms so we had the space to catch up with each other.

It was a rare moment where I had Eddy without anyone around, and I decided to capitalize on it. “Eddy, how goes your studying?”

“Real life or textbook?”

I supposed that was a fair question considering the past few days. “Both.”

“Real life, learning all the things.” He perked up visibly, that excited light shining in his expression as he connected with something he obviously loved doing. “Niamh’s been teaching me how to track, you know, and she set me on someone’s trail this morning. It wasn’t until they got into a car that I lost them. She said for human eyes, that was really good.”

Of course he was good at tracking someone. Of course he was. I swear to any god listening this kid was a natural spy in the making. That’s why I started training him to begin with, granted, but it was nice he was picking up the skills quickly.

“Good,” I said. I also had to resist the urge to pat his head because he looked like a golden retriever in that moment, but I digressed. “Alright, I want you to continue learning from her. You’ll never be quite as good as a Woodland Elf—their eyes are a whole other level—but the more you can learn from her, the better. While you’re learning that, I have a new challenge for you.”

Eddy loved challenges. Lived and breathed them. The only thing he loved more than a challenge was a new book. Kid practically vibrated in his chair.

“This is worth ten books of your choosing.” I arched an eyebrow, judged the bait had been properly set, and bit down on a smile. Careful, Jamie, your evil might be showing. “It’s time to hone some pickpocketing skills.”

Eddy was absolutely not deterred, just intrigued. “Spies do that?”

“Spies have to acquire information no matter what. The more skills you have in your arsenal, the better. If your mark has secret papers in his pocket, wouldn’t it be easier to just slip those out and run away than do some elaborate scheme that might fail?”

Eddy nodded seriously. Well, he was trying to look serious, but he was downright giddy with the idea he could pickpocket people and get away with it.

I knew how he rolled.

“I’ll teach you what basics I know—which isn’t a lot, I have to warn you—and get you a proper teacher for this when we’re back home. There’s many a reformed thief who will be happy to teach you the trade for the amount of money I’ll pay them. In the meantime, after I teach you some basics, I want you to practice on Evans. Anything you can steal off Evans and bring back to me is proof you’ve won a round and I’ll buy you the books.”

Eddy nodded happily, even as he objected, “Not Henri too?”

“Dude, if you can’t steal from Henri, then we’ve got bigger issues.
