It should not surprise us that even they, the faithful, are as partial to the richly woven sadisms of this final drama as they are to TV terminators and soft-core flagellators. The dead, especially the evil dead, wear no clothes—so prurience is mixed in with the pain, just as it was when they stretched grandma naked on the rack, or when the ingenue got sliced apart while in the shower. Hell is populated by nakeds—howling jumping grilling boiling nakeds, boys and girls together, all wicked, and all finding out, at last, lastingly, with the nerve-endings of their souls, the penalty for the orgies that used to play in their early dreams and later assignations—those portents, now unreturnable, of their fate to be among the damned.
