DIAGNOSING AND TREATING VAGINISMUS

We perform a physical examination to investigate strictly physical conditions, such as infection or inflammatory dermatitis, that may have triggered the pain. If a cause is identified, both the cause and the pain of pelvic floor dysfunction/vaginismus require treatment. As with vaginitis, the vaginismus will often resolve after treating the underlying cause. The most confirmatory examination requires both the patient and doctor. You have to tell me when it hurts. This is not a time to grin and bear it. If you feel pain under my finger, then we’re probably thinking vaginismus.

Of course, vaginismus and vulvodynia aren’t the only causes for pain with penetrative sex, so you and your doctor may want to work through other possibilities. This list is not exhaustive, but I just want to give you an idea of how many possibilities there could really be and remind you that none of them are your fault.
