CHAPTER 16

THE PAST…

It’s been three weeks since I started hanging out with Clover and Ellis. Each weekend, I sneak out and we go to parties. But tonight, it’s just Clover and me at her house. Her mom is gone for the weekend with her boyfriend.

Clover lives in this single-wide home located on an older man’s property. It sits beside a dilapidated barn filled with hay that’s used to feed all the cows wandering around on the surrounding acres. The owner lives in a single-story 1970s-style home that sits up at the front of the property. A dirt driveway is the only exit to and from Clover’s house, and it goes right by the owner’s house, so he always knows when they’re home. Clover says the guy is a creep. She told me that, one time while she was outside sun tanning, she caught him gawking at her from across the yard. He was trying to act like he was watering his plants, but it was pretty evident he was staring at her. She said when she informed her mom of this, she brushed it off and said to let him stare because he was letting them live in his extra house for cheap and she didn’t want to risk them getting evicted. She also said men couldn’t help but stare at half-naked girls, so it wasn’t a big deal anyway.

Clover told me all of this during the drive to her house today as a warning.

I’ve been at her house for about an hour but haven’t seen the guy yet. We’re sitting in her backyard in camping chairs with the crisp air circling us. I’m looking at hairstyles online, and Clover has her phone out, scrolling through one of her social media accounts.

As I’m searching, I notice movement in my peripheral vision. I turn to see what it is and spot an older man with dark hair standing in the backyard of the house out front. He’s holding a garden hose and is spraying water on the dry, yellow grass, but his eyes are locked on us.

His lips spread to a grin when our gazes collide, and I quickly look away.

“Umm …” I say with wide eyes. “Is that the owner of the house?”

Clover has sunglasses on, her hair is pulled up into a messy bun, and she kicked off her shoes when we got here. When she glances up from her phone, her gaze drifts over my shoulder, and she frowns.

“Yeah, that’s Jerry,” she says without taking her eyes off him.

Jerry shamelessly keeps staring at us.

“Why is he still looking at us?” I hiss under my breath while shifting my weight uncomfortably.

“Because he’s a douchebag who gets away with everything,” she replies then lowers her sunglasses, carrying his gaze. “Yeah, we see you, asshole.”

His grin only widens.

“What a fucking asshole,” she grumbles, flipping him off.

His smile dissipates as he drops the hose and strides toward us.

“Shit, he’s coming over here,” I whisper in a panic.

“Good. I’m going to tell him off,” she replies, setting her phone down and sitting straighter in her seat.
