Greg sipped his coffee, using the flexible tube protruding from the CASPer’s interior. It was lukewarm but he didn’t mind. Coffee was coffee, and right now he needed the caffeine. So far, the night was quiet and that made him suspicious. They’d defeated two forces taking and holding this mine so far, so their opponents had to know someone was here in force. Night would be the opportunity to hit them.

Lara was asleep in the fighting position, laser rifle clutched to her chest. Her suit stood nearby, in standby mode. It would take her only a few seconds to get in and wake it up. He knew her ability to sleep lightly and wake ready. Made her grouchy afterwards but in a combat situation, that was good.

Leaning forward to take another sip, he froze. He’d been alternating sensor scans between low light and infrared. Right after he’d switched modes, something had changed. He hit the replay and watched as the ground subtly changed shape, about fifty yards out to his two o’clock. He rescanned the area, flipping back and forth between the two sensor modes. His gut was telling him there was something out there.

Something blinked at him.

Suddenly, he realized he wasn’t looking at one something but lots of somethings. Triggering a flare from the back launcher, he switched to the all-hands channel and broadcast, “Bunker Bunker Bunker! All hands, infiltrators at relative two o’clock, fifty yards from my position!” Then he started firing with his MAC.
