Chapter Eleven
The Way Back Home
We wake up bright and early at 7:00AM the next day.
After we all gather in the main courtyard, we do some light exercise before enjoying our breakfast. Itâs a simple meal, nothing too fancyârice balls, rolled omelet, and a light pork miso soupâbut still quite nice. I think the other guys agree with me, because theyâve all also been eagerly scarfing the food down.
âHahahaha! I love it when I see youngâuns eating their fill. Eat as much as youâd like! Thereâs even seconds if you want! Ahh, it feels good when my cooking is appreciated,â Yamamoto exclaims with a hearty smile.
I didnât think very highly of the man before, but I must admit that this has definitely given him some brownie points with me, thatâs for sure.
Eventually, we finish eating and head toward one of the buildingâs former classrooms. Weâre going to be staying here till around noon practicing our debate skills or something of the sort. Weâll mainly be discussing the schoolâs many problems in order to come up with solutions to improve or solve them. At first, I thought that only the student council members and Makiri-sensei would be participating, but apparently Touka and I will be joining in, as well.
We arrive at the classroom, and itâs quickly decided that Ike will be the one leading the conversation as a sort of moderator. With that settled, we begin our discussions.
Most of the time, I feel like Iâm being placed in the role of a yes-man. Although they frequently ask for my opinionâlooking for views from a normal studentâs perspectiveâI donât really feel as though I can speak for everyone else at the school. I mean, my experience is totally different from my peers, and I know I shouldnât play victim and pretend I have the same problems as everyone else. So in the end, I mostly end up nodding and agreeing.
Touka, on the other hand, has some very... strong opinions about the issues weâre discussing and makes sure to let us know it. Her presence is making this whole event a lot more interesting overall.
Sheâs definitely made for this, I think as I look at her.
âUm, Senpai, can you stop staring at me so much?â she asks, glancing at me.
âOh, right. Sorry,â I reply as I look away.
Sheâs right; I was staring too much. Gotta stop doing that. Instead of leaving it at that, though, she gets even more ticked off for some reason.
âI mean, itâs not like I dislike it or anything, okay? But isnât it super obvious that itâs embarrassing for me, too?â she whispers to me.
I look over at her again; sheâs fiddling with her bangs and looking away. Her face is so red that it reaches as far as her ears. It all just reminds me of what happened last nightâit was pretty embarrassing in the moment, and recalling it now makes me feel even more bashful. I bet thatâs what sheâs thinking of, too. Shit, now even Iâm blushing. Damn it all.
