“Don’t worry about it. Do you need anything else from us?”

“I don’t think so. We have the video, that should be plenty.”

“I don’t think we let them get far enough to make it attempted robbery. You’re probably going to have to settle for illegal carry, or maybe felon in possession.”

“Don’t worry about that. I know these fellows. Both of them are repeat offenders. I doubt they’re going to get much in the way of leniency.”

“That’s your business, not mine.”

“How can we get ahold of you, if we do need something?”

I handed him a business card. “I may not always be available, but leave a message, and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.”

“Thank you, Admiral.”

We walked back to our table, and our waitress was waiting for us. “Would you like replacement meals, since these have gotten cold?”

“Could you just run them through the microwave? No need to make a whole other meal. I don’t know about Nikki, but I don’t think I could get around another plateful. You folks serve a nice big portion.”

Nikki said, “To tell the truth, I think I’ve lost my appetite. Could we just pay up, and go?”

“Sure. I’m not all that hungry, either.”

I dropped a John on the table, and went up to pay. The officers were still taking witness statements, but they didn’t seem to want to talk to us, so I paid the ticket, and we went out to the Audi. Once we were inside, Nikki said, “I think I’ve had all of Phoenix I want, for today. Do you mind if I fly out of here?”

“I don’t mind at all.”

She lifted the car, and we eased out of controlled airspace. Once she was clear, she punched it, and we went suborbital on our way home. I got out my comm as soon as she headed for space. She said, “I thought you were on shore leave, Caveman.”

“I need to get somebody on finding Xander some help, before I forget. I don’t have Jeeves to help me right now.”

“Okay, I guess.”

I called Topper. “Hey, Boss. What can I do for you?”

“Sorry to bother you while you’re on shore leave, but I figured you would know who to put on the job. Xander Richardson, the research guy at Xanadu, has come up with some decent emitters, but he doesn’t have a clue how to go about getting them approved by the FAA to be used in an aircraft with human occupants. Do we have anyone who might be able to help him with that?”

“I don’t know, Boss, but I’ll forward it to Sue, and she can run a search. Do you need me to call you back when she’s done?”

“As long as she finds someone on the Gene, don’t bother. If the person she finds is on another ship, you better run it through me, just to keep the chain of command straight.”

“Sounds right. Anything else you need?”

“Can’t think of anything. How are things in Iowa?”

“Going well. Jake has one more project for us to work on, and then we’ll be back to Missouri.
