Jack was thrilled to see Melanie had arrived with Aunt Nellie. He wasn’t sure she would actually be attending tonight. Aunt Nellie had been a little cryptic, not her usual style since she seemed to always want to push the two of them together, but now that he saw her here, surrounded by all the people wanting to talk with Aunt Nellie, Jack felt the desire to pull her away from the crowd and help her get some breathing room.

The Opera House was rather full, given it was the off season. He enjoyed it better when it was less crowded as it was now. Fewer mothers pushed their daughters at every eligible bachelor.

He’d seen a few of them tonight, so he hoped he’d be able to prevail upon Miss Crenshaw to spend most of the evening with him to help keep some of those mothers and daughters away from him.

Amelia hadn’t tolerated the trip to London as well as he’d hoped, so she had declined attending the opera tonight, leaving him without a partner in his box. He had two options if he wanted to have Melanie help him. He could either invite her to sit with him in his box, as well as a few of his gentlemen friends and their wives, or he could try to secure a seat in Aunt Nellie’s box. With all of the friends surrounding Aunt Nellie right now, he wasn’t sure there would be room for him.

As he neared the enthusiastic crowd around Melanie and Aunt Nellie, he watched Melanie take a few steps back. She didn’t seem to like being in the center of the group and looked as if she wished to avoid speaking to them. Jack moved closer, working his way between a few people in order to reach her. Before he even said her name to get her attention, she turned to him and her eyes widened in recognition. She took a step toward him and reached for him.

Knowing she needed to get away from the others, Jack took her hand and placed it on his arm, leading her to a more quiet section of the room. He saw Aunt Nellie turn to look at him as they moved away. The woman seemed to have a keen sense of her surroundings because she looked worried at first when Melanie moved farther from her. When Aunt Nellie met Jack’s eyes, she nodded her approval and then returned her attention to her friends.

“How are you, Miss Crenshaw?” Jack asked. “I hope the crowd isn’t too much for you.”

Melanie took a deep breath and sighed. “I feel so much better already. Thank you, Jack. I mean, Sir Hughes. I am grateful to you for saving me.”

Jack couldn’t look away from her. Melanie’s bright eyes that had seemed so concerned before now looked relaxed as if she were ready to enjoy her evening.

“I wonder if you would consider joining me in my box?” Jack asked. “There will be others there, though not nearly as many as in Aunt Nellie’s box.
