The police department was just a few blocks from the Enchanted, so I’d waked there and back. I liked the crisp winter air; it refreshed and reawakened me even though it drained my skin of moisture. I ran into Peter Parallel headed toward the bookstore on my way back.

“Hello, darling.” Peter wore a black waist-length coat with an attached hat hanging in the back. He wore a beanie to keep his balding head warm. “You out for a walk in this lovely winter weather?”

I smiled. “On my way back from a visit with the police chief.” I fiddled with the can of pepper spray in my coat pocket.

“Parking tickets?”

“Nope, thankfully. Did you know I have an aunt and uncle?”

He dropped his head, nodded, then patted me on the shoulder. “How about we take a little walk together?”

“I’d like that.”

He lit a cigarette. I didn’t even know he smoked. “In case you’re wondering, I’m a witch, but these days, I do little with magic. Just don’t feel the need.”

That didn’t surprise me.

“I’m sure there’s a lot for me to learn, but I’m hoping I won’t have to, I don’t know. Deal with it, I guess.”

“You never know. It might come in handy a time or two.”

“So far, I’ve made it through life without it.”

“Appears so. Your mom, she did right by you, wanting to give you a normal life and all. The magical world, well, it may be full of excitement, but it’s not always a good place either.”

“I’m learning that.”

“Your mom learned that, too, and the hard way. I’m not sure what you know and don’t know.”

“Bessie told me what happened to my father.”

“Hmm. Your father was a good man. It’s too bad what happened, but he died a hero, and you need to know that.” He took a puff from the smelly cigarette and blew it out. “But your mom, she never quite got over it, and when your granddaddy took Allegra and Samuel’s powers, she didn’t think that was enough. Even your granddaddy banning them from town didn’t satisfy her. She up and moved before you were born. It was just too much for her, I guess, out in the real world.” He took another drag from his cigarette, then dropped it on the ground and smashed it with his boot. “It was hard for your mom, losing your father like that. I understood how she felt. I lost someone I loved, too. Never quite got over it.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t know.”

“Few people know. We kept our relationship quiet. She wanted it to be a secret until the time was right, but that time never came.”

“That must have been hard.”

His eyes glossed over as he stared ahead. “You do what you got to do. Life goes on.”

We’d circled the small old downtown area of Holiday Hills, all of three blocks, and at right about that time, stood in front of the Enchanted’s door.

He held the door open for me. “Well, guess this is where we say goodbye.”

“You’re not coming in?”

“Nah, I’ve got some business to take care of.
