Oak and Michael were really close from when they played together. And surely Oak didn’t want to lose to Michael. He wanted to knock him off. I’ve seen Oak go at Mike and knock him down and foul him hard, just like he does anybody else. But he had our number. MJ was a cunning guy and I don’t think a guy like John Starks had the intellect to understand how to take Michael Jordan down, if that makes sense. It has to be a strategic, cunning way to knock Michael Jordan off. Number one, you can’t beat your chest because he can beat his chest better than you can. He’s accomplished more, and Michael could take advantage of John psychologically. As tough as John was, and John had some great games against Michael in Chicago, but that’s what I noticed, he had our number and it was all mental. He had a mental edge against our team because Patrick wasn’t in awe of him but liked him a little too much. Oak liked Mike and they were good friends, but he was still mean enough that he would go at Michael. He did have Patrick somewhat brainwashed, to a certain extent. I just think this guy is obsessed with winning. Magic was one of those guys. Larry Bird was one. We [with Mark Aguirre] used to go over to Magic’s house, lay out a nice spread of soul food. I guess about my third year in the league I stopped going. I said, ‘I gotta play against this guy. I’m tired of this dude posting me up.’ And because of dinner last night I’m feeling like I didn’t have my edge by going over, letting him feed me, smiling, and then come out and try to kill me the next night on the floor. I said, ‘You all go ahead.’ None of them had to play against him like I did. I had to guard the dude. I said, ‘Mark, I’m not going. Why not? I don’t need to be here playing against one of the greatest players ever to play the game and not have the edge that I need to go out and compete against him.’ You gotta have that because they’re killers. And they’ve got it. Michael always was thinking.”
