After engaging these questions, I invite you to slow down. If your congregation is like mine, the mind and the will may be more developed than the heart. Thus, I suggest that you read Marjorie Thompson’s Soul Feast chapter by chapter, using the group study guide in the back of the book and practicing the varied disciplines described. After a period of three or four months, consider whether your group might be willing to articulate a covenant that would deepen your practice of the contemplative. Any covenant should be both structured and flexible—structured enough to provide guidance but flexible enough to allow each participant to discern spiritual practices that suit him or her best. Finally, I strongly urge you to consider including an activist component in this covenant, such as the relational meeting. The benefit of a relational meeting component is that it will include the larger community in the purview of the group’s practice.
