TWELVE
Jake jumped out of his seat and hailed the bus driver as they raced to the front of the bus. He dropped the flashlight into Rebeccaâs backpack and helped her slip it over her shoulders just as the doors opened.
Once they had made their way to a space clear of the crowds, Rebecca handed him the clue she had found so that he could read it himself.

TAHITIAN MOON
âThese keys must unlock a car parked at the Tahitian Moon Resort. We need to get to the ferry. Thatâs the fastest way there,â Jake said.
The ferry was a mammoth white two-decker that was modeled to look like an old-fashioned steamboat. Tinted glass paneling wrapped all around the upper deck, and an American flag flew proudly on the mast. As they approached the dock, Jake noticed a crew member closing the stanchion, and he called out to him as they hustled the last few yards down the boardwalk.
âLooks like we made it just in time,â Rebecca said. âHave you ever been on this ferry before?â
âNever,â Jake said. âBut I did hit the buffet at the Tahitian Moon one night. Theyâve got quite the spread.â
âPlease do not talk about food right now,â Rebecca joked. âI am absolutely starving.â
âMaybe we can get something quick here once weâre on the top deck? Weâve got at least fifteen minutes before we cross this lagoon.â
Jake could tell that Rebecca was hesitant to consider doing anything that would distract her from the mission to find her son, but he knew they would need some energy, as this search was going to continue all night. As they inched forward, she noticed the No Swimming signs posted all along the edge of the lagoon, with the black silhouette of an alligator.
âWho would ever think to swim in there?â she asked.
âYou never know,â Jake said.
They boarded at the stern and excused themselves as they brushed by all the passengers who had taken the first seats on the lower decks and made their way toward the stairs near the bow. Up there the crowds appeared to be a little less dense, and Jake believed they would find a galley or at least some snacks to nibble on while they crossed.
They needed this moment to exhale, since they had been running nonstop the entire day. As they reached the top deck of the ferry, Jake noticed the sun setting in the sky behind them and saw how beautiful Rebecca looked in the fading light.
âThis would be a great spot to watch the fireworks,â he said. âAnd Iâve heard that as you cross the bay, they have lights on a lot of the boats for an on-the-water electric parade.â
âAustin would absolutely love this,â she said. âWhen I find him, Iâm going to hug him and not let go for a week.â She paused a moment, staring ahead, before continuing her thoughts. âI canât believe I let this happen.â
Jake turned and took her by the shoulders.
âDo not, for a minute, place any of the blame of this on yourself.
