For He shall give His angels charge over you to keep you in all your ways. – Psalm 91:11

Lucy shook awake, unsure how long she had slept, but having woken up, she jerked to a sitting position to find David—on his knees—facing the door.

Alarm shooting through her, she swung her feet downward. “David? Are you okay?”

As he spun, he looked toward her with a small smile—for the first time. “Yes. I’m fine. You slept soundly. I wanted to give you some time to sleep a little more before we left. It’s almost dawn if the sounds out there are any indication, so we should be leaving before the sun lights up the sky.” He turned toward the door, getting to his feet. “And our hosts are fast asleep. They were kind and gracious to let us in, but they were drunk. I won’t assume they’ll be as accommodating when fully lucid.”

“Wow.” Lucy shrugged her shoes on and swept her hair aside, wishing she had a brush to loosen the tangled mess. She reminded herself to return the knife to the kitchen, thankful she hadn’t needed it. “I guess I really slept since I didn’t hear anything all night long.”

“You did. You slept through the visit of two people who are part of a search party and stopped by to ask about any strangers around. I heard Jeannie say there were none.”

“People came by?”

“Yes, they did. I was surprised the woman remembered. I thought she’d tell them we were here. Imagine my exhale when she said no one else was here.” David shook his blankets and, one by one, folded them as he narrated the events. He did it perfectly, like it was a prized item, and as though it was something he’d done repeatedly.

Something he did without thinking.

A habit he’d sustained over a long time.

She thought back to the accident.

His reluctance to talk about himself.

The former black outfit with the initials.

It was almost as if her mind had begun connecting the dots.

She gulped and felt her eyes widen. “You’re a prisoner.”

He jerked sharply toward her but didn’t move and didn’t respond.

He didn’t deny it either, which had blood rushing to her ears.

Lucy, how did you get entangled with a prisoner? Her mind swirled in all directions. What had she gotten herself into? And as her fingers clenched fistfuls of cotton sheets, she settled on the first thing that made sense. “Why didn’t you tell me?” Her heart pounded hard.

She shouldn’t have trusted a stranger.

Her parents had taught her not to trust strangers.

Yet, here she was. She trusted this man because he’d rescued her. But what if he’d meant her harm? “You’re a criminal, and I slept in the same room as you. You could’ve hurt me. Who knows whether your name is truly David.”

“That’s where you’re wrong.” He eyed her, seemingly slighted by her words as his brows dipped. “Yes, I’m a prisoner. But I’m not a criminal. I was set up for a crime.”

Lucy wanted to smack herself.
