The museum café served them penis calzone followed by phallic-shaped waffles topped with berries and cream. While it wasn’t exactly the gourmet dinner out Josh had been expecting when he’d asked Liam to arrange their date, he had to admit it was a lot more entertaining. And it had lightened the mood between them—something Josh hadn’t been certain was possible after the conversations of the last few days, despite their best efforts in the spa.

They kept the small talk light and inconsequential over dinner, still giggling about their favourite exhibits, or the mug Winter had found in the gift shop.

It wasn’t until they were sipping their coffees—with penis-shaped patterns in the foam, obviously—that he returned at all to their earlier unfinished conversation. And even that felt lighter. More...flirtatious, even—not that he’d admit that to Liam, or mention it to Winter, for fear of breaking the spell.

‘So, you like directing?’ he asked.

Winter nodded, placing her cup back in its saucer. ‘I do. More than I thought I would. I mean... I think I was just challenging myself to try something new originally. And maybe...maybe hiding a little by being behind the camera instead of in front of it. But mostly it was, you know, throwing myself into my career because I’d been such a failure at the personal side of things, that old cliché.’

‘Right.’ It might be a cliché, but Josh’s chest still tightened at the casual way she said it. Such a failure. As if it was an established, unarguable fact about her—the same way her black hair or green eyes were.

Except it wasn’t true. He was the failure. Not her.

He was the one who hadn’t been there when she’d needed him. Who she hadn’t been able to talk to about how she was feeling. He’d failed as a husband, and it had cost him everything.

But Winter carried on, oblivious to his startled musings.

‘But I really enjoyed it. I liked being able to tell a whole story, not just my part in it. I liked having that sort of control too—to put across things that mattered to me. Have you seen it? Another Time and Place, I mean.’

Josh started. ‘Of course I’ve seen it. You think I wouldn’t go see your first movie as a director?’

Was the pinkness in her cheeks just due to the coffee? He hoped not.

‘What did you think?’ Her voice was small, uncertain, and Josh couldn’t help but smile at it.

‘The award nomination wasn’t enough for your ego?’

She shook her head. ‘It’s not... Awards aren’t everything, you and I both know that. I want to know what you think.’

A warmth filled him at the idea that his opinion still mattered to her. That she thought about what he thought at all.

‘I loved it,’ he said honestly. ‘I thought it was smart, and funny, and touching and real. And I could feel you in every frame of it.’

Her blush had gone from a faint tint to bright red now, and Josh realised he loved that too.
