Discuss Their Interests and Issues

Taking an interest in what others are thinking and doing is often a much more powerful form of encouragement than praise.

—ROBERT MARTIN

I have a confession–I hate watching sports on TV. My personal interest in sports in which I’m not a participant is actually less than zero. That said, if you come to my class and share with me that you are excited about the World Series being on TV, then that is what we will talk about. Not only that, the next time I see you in class, I will ask you if the team you were rooting for came out on top.

Take a moment and think about the things that interest you. Some might be insignificant or silly. Maybe you are into Star Trek or perhaps you like fly-fishing. Other things may be more significant to you—your work, romantic partner, or your children. Regardless of how big or small those things are in your life, they are important to you; and that is what you most enjoy talking about.

Your students are not different from you. While their personal interests may differ from yours, students are most happy when they are talking about the things they feel most passionate about. If you want your students to leave your class feeling good about their time with you, then let them lead the conversation. Talk about their kids or their hobbies, and find something about what they are saying that can excite you as well.

For example, if you wanted to talk about the World Series, I could mention an article about a famous baseball player or coach that incorporates yoga into their training. There is almost no topic in which you cannot find common ground with another person.

Tip: Always talk about what your students want to discuss, and then find a way to share in their excitement on that subject.
