37. asteya-pratiṣṭhāyāṃ sarva-ratnopasthānam, When the principle of not stealing is firmly established, every type of gemstone approaches a person.
38. brahmacarya-pratiṣṭhāyāṃ vīrya-lābhaḥ, When the principle of celibacy is firmly established, great potency is acquired.
39. aparigraha-sthairye janma-kathantā-saṃbodhaḥ, When the principle of not seeking ownership becomes fixed, the details of previous births become known.
Each of these five sutras deals with one of the yamas listed above in sutra 30, and the main emphasis is on the positive result gained by adherence to each principle. A person who accepts the principle of ahimsā becomes free of enmity, perhaps in the sense that all antagonism towards others is removed from his own consciousness, or perhaps he is no longer regarded with enmity by any other creature. Satya makes the outcome of action certain; this may indicate that all endeavours meet with success, or it may simply mean that the outcome is certain because there is no dishonesty about the nature of the action, and the intention behind it.
Sutras 37 to 38 seem to be looking ahead to the Vibhūti-pāda, the third chapter of the Yoga Sutras, in which it is revealed that supernatural powers come to those who practise Yoga. Here, we are told that a person who adheres strictly to the principle of asteya, not stealing, will be blessed with wealth of all kinds. Then, if a person can adhere to a vow of celibacy, he will acquire vīrya, or potency, an idea that is perhaps somewhat akin to Tantric teachings on sexual fluids and inner strength. Finally, if one adheres to the principle of aparigraha, having no sense of proprietorship, then he will come to understand the nature of previous births.
