We won’t go into the diaphragm in too much detail. There are five physical diaphragms in the body and, as some yogis claim, at least that many subtle diaphragms. The one we’re talking about here is technically called the thoracic or respiratory diaphragm. If you want to know more about our primary breathing muscle, refer to the books in the “Recommended Reading” section of this guide. For our purposes here’s what’s important.
Look at the accompanying illustration of the diaphragm. You’ll immediately notice its unique appearance and central location in the torso. Notice first that the right half of the muscle is slightly higher than the left, to accommodate the large bulk of the liver. It’s been imaginatively described in various ways: as a double dome, an umbrella, the lopsided cap of a mushroom, and a jellyfish. These images, remember, describe the muscle at the end of an exhale, since on the inhale the muscle flattens out (see fig. 12.2).
