Doing these poses in sequence keeps the muscles stretching and allows the body to go deep into opening. By moving through flow you also encourage yourself to keep active, which is really important in labor. Lying on your back slows labor down and makes it more painful. When you lie on your back, you make it harder for the baby to find space to make movements; in addition, when you are reclined it is difficult for baby to descend over the coccyx bone, the end of the spine that we know as the tailbone.

When you stay in one position through labor, you become vulnerable to the pain without having a way to work with it. One of the things I stress in prenatal yoga classes is the freedom of mobility. Using the flow of postures allows you to experience mobility and enables you to keep the body limber and able to manage the change of poses when pain becomes almost unbearable. Teaching yourself to flow in early labor will give you the strength you need to move in transition when you will have the most resistance to movement.

The active labor postures consist of seven postures that were part of the early flow:

Child’s

Cat/Cow

Squat

Mountain

Wide-Angle Forward Bend

Crescent Lunge

Frog
